What Is the Tiny Hole For?
The small opening is generally a vent.
When you drink a hot beverage from a cup with a tightly fitted lid, air needs a way to move into the cup as liquid leaves it.
Without enough airflow, pressure inside the cup can change. That can make drinking uncomfortable and may cause the liquid to flow unevenly.
The tiny vent helps allow air to enter while you drink.
It’s Not a Tiny Straw Hole
The opening can look like a miniature straw hole, but that isn’t necessarily its purpose.
Many hot-drink lids have a separate drinking opening designed for your mouth. The much smaller hole elsewhere on the lid can function as an air vent.
Think of it as giving the cup a little breathing space.
