A cast iron skillet can last for decades with the right care. Even if it has developed rust or lost some of its seasoning, you may not need to replace it.
With a few simple supplies and the right technique, you can clean, restore, and reseason your cast iron skillet at home.
What You’ll Need
- Fine steel wool
- Mild dish soap
- Scrub brush or sponge
- Clean dish towel or paper towels
- Vegetable oil or another suitable cooking oil
- Aluminum foil
- Oven
1. Remove the Rust
Start by scrubbing the rusty areas with fine steel wool.
Work carefully until the loose rust and buildup have been removed and the exposed cast iron feels clean.
For heavy rust, additional restoration may be necessary.
